We had the privilege to interact with Sktr. Sameer Ansari from Formigas Roller Sports Academy. This is what he had to share with us on how to start skateboarding classes in your city :
For anyone looking to start coaching in skating or skateboarding, here’s my advice:
1. Learn Patience - Patience is crucial. Master the art of staying calm and composed.
2. Control Your Emotions - Maintain emotional balance and stay professional at all times.
3. Take Responsibility - In difficult situations, reflect on your actions first rather than blaming others.
4. Set Boundaries - Maintain respectful and appropriate boundaries be it adults or kids.
5. Work Ethically - Uphold strong work ethics in all aspects of your coaching.
6. Be Kind - Always approach your students and peers with kindness.
7. Community Contribution - Coach not for fame, but to contribute positively to the community.
8. Support Growth - Help fellow skaters and the community grow and thrive.
9. Stay Humble - Never think you are the best coach. Always be open to learning and improving.
What would you advise new skaters who wants to take classes in their locality?
To start coaching effectively, begin by approaching your local park where people already know you. Be welcoming when you meet new skaters, especially those visiting the park or street for the first time. It's essential to be gentle and respectful, particularly with girls and women, so they feel safe and comfortable in this sport.
Once you gain some experience in coaching and approaching new skaters, start by taking on kids. Keep your expectations realistic because children may not progress as quickly or steadily as adults. Patience is key. Always motivate your students and make them feel like they are the best skaters in the world. Appreciate their small efforts and stay consistent in your hard work.
Find creative and effective ways to teach so that your students never feel bored coming to your classes. Wear appropriate clothing during coaching lessons and choose your words carefully when talking to your students, as they often look up to their coaches and emulate them, especially in skateboarding. Make sure to wear proper shoes, not worn-out or dirty ones used for skate practice. This attention to detail will help you create a positive and professional image as a coach.
